Every day we come across different challenges in our lives. We behave differently upon encountering them based on how our feelings are towards these challenges. These different feelings can be clustered into two parts – being Positive/Optimistic and being Negative/Pessimistic.

Regardless of what it is, a particular feeling always originates from our brain which then activates nerves to react accordingly. Depending upon our reaction, brain asserts that the signals it gives out are appropriate and further it adjusts itself to emit such signals upon facing challenges. This is how we train our brain unconsciously irrespective of it being an optimistic or pessimistic response.
If we train our mind to look at life events positively, it opens up a lot of opportunities to find solutions for the challenges we face. Being positive always results in a response which is a measured, well thought through solution to the problem or the challenge. Not being positive results in a reaction which is a spontaneous action often not under our control. Such a reaction may result into a series of many more which follow one after another because of a wrong move in the first place. So being positive may appear to be difficult and time consuming but results in healthier outcomes both personally and socially. Not being positive is quick and instant but results in to being unhealthy for self and the relations.
How to be positive always?
Being ‘mindful’ is the secret to be positive and optimistic. Be present in the moment! Be aware of the trail of thoughts and emotions running through your mind. Take pauses in the day to reflect. Self-reflection helps to strengthen ‘mindfulness’ and be in control of your thoughts.
1. Start your day with meditation
A session of meditation is a great way to calm and control the mind especially if done at sunrise. The moment we wake up, mind starts decrypting what we hear & see. By meditating early, we are calming it down to receive optimistic or positive inputs that it would capture throughout the day.
2. Cut the clutter
Once the mind is calm, next target is our senses. We need to train them to see, hear and talk only positive things around us. To start with our conversations, we need to avoid pessimistic words like, no, cannot and so on as much as possible, unless absolutely necessary.
Avoid unproductive discussions such as gossiping. Train your eyes to see good around you. Commit yourself to improve not so appealing sights (clutter, waste on the ground etc) to make the scene good for others to see. Hear soothing music which makes you stay energised positively throughout the day.
3. Believe in yourself
Be confident, consistent and be patient. Believe in dedication with which you need to take care of yourself and also others. Hard work always pays and multiplies in the longer term.
4. Capture the positive moments
Start a habit of noting down or taking pics of the positive events you come across or you get involved. Also note down if you react negatively. Do actions that matter to you or to others. At the end of the day glancing through your list will give immense satisfaction to you if there are more positives on your list. Give yourself a star or a credit and as the rating goes up, your mind starts getting trained to watch out for such events regularly.
5. Learn something new
Have open mind for learning irrespective of your personal or professional life. Inclination towards learning makes brain to be alert. If you are a house maker, apart from your house hold chores, involve yourself in gardening, reading, socialising, learning new languages and hobbies as time permits. Developing mastery in what you do gives a sense of feeling positive.
6. Keep yourself motivated
Read books, biographies to learn to be self-motivated. Surround yourself in the company of good people with whom you are able to discuss and to learn few steps to improvise yourself. Attend workshops to know whether you are on track or you need any changes to be on track.
