It’s Friday afternoon and Stacy decides to take Anna, newly joined co-worker, for a quick desert break to nearby café. Stacy gets a death by chocolate cake while Anna is still going through the menu. After a while health conscious Anna, with a concerned face decides not to order anything. Then Stacy only end up walking back to the office with the dessert. And rather than bonding with her new co-worker, Stacy ends up feeling disconnected.
Something similar has almost certainly happened to you at one point or another. May be taking a box of rich cupcakes has earned you a less-than-loving glance from your dieting relatives.
So how do we all bond well over food without judging or wastage? What if there is a way to let others know your new likes!
All humans eat to survive. They also eat to express appreciation, for a sense of belonging, as part of family customs, and for self-realization. For example, someone who has just turned to gluten-free diet may eat a piece of cake that has been baked in his or her honor.
But what if you knew the person’s new choices in advance? You would have baked a cake with almond flour? That would have made that person feel really happy? Stacy would have picked a different cafe if she knew Anna’s likes?
An individual’s food habits also depend on the social groups. For example, a young person at a football game may eat certain foods when accompanied by friends and prefer other foods when with family.
Every individual has unique likes and dislikes concerning foods. These preferences develop over time, and are influenced by personal experiences such as encouragement to eat, exposure to a food, family customs and rituals, advertising, life style choices and personal values. For example, one person may not like Indian food, despite the fact that it is family favorite.
As a social practice, we often carry along food items or liquor while visiting friends and family. We cannot always be sure about food habits, health practices and personal tastes. And even if we do, their habits and tastes may evolve over time. Hence there is always a possibility of them not liking what we buy for them.
