For years, I’ve repeated the same old narrative to myself: tomorrow, I will write. And for years, I didn’t. Today, I build a list of things I will do tomorrow: I will get in shape. I will stop eating processed sugar. I will start writing every day. I will stop wastage. And then I start…
After practicing mindfulness, I have realized the golden rule of life: Behind every system of actions is a system of beliefs.
But the habit doesn’t last very long. Motivation fades away, and so does my willpower to build this habit I truly long to create. So I stop.
A few weeks or months pass by, I feel guilty for giving up, so I try again, and the cycle continues. No matter how badly I want the change, the habits simply don’t seem to stick.
How many times have you fallen victim to this process?
Early this month Tiwiw team wrote about how to use Tiwiw platform effectively to change habits. But don’t be under illusion that habits stick by the mere existence of goals in wishlist, rewards and motivation.
But in truth, they only stick when you bridge them into your identity and see their practice as an affirmation of who you are. After practicing mindfulness I have realized the golden rule of life: behind every system of actions is a system of beliefs.
I would try to build a habit of writing, but the very act of public writing itself was not fitting with how I saw myself to be. And that’s why I couldn’t get a habit of writing to stick — it wasn’t an extension of who I am as a person. These habits need to matter, and they can only matter when you bring them to transform into a fabric of your identity.
So, here’s the first key to making habits stick: start focusing on building identity-based habits.
Identity cannot be fabricated; it emerges from within!
– Doug Cooper
You have to shed your older self. You have to integrate the element of who you want to become into who you are today.
So how you can strengthen the goals in your Tiwiw wishlist as affirmations; so they reflect your future-self, your new identity!
Here are some Tips:
If goal is lose weight, the wish is to become athletic (identity).
If the goal is to stop wastage, the wish is to become a conscious consumer (identity).
If goal is to publish a book, the wish is to become a writer (identity).
If the goal is to stop smoking, the wish is to become a non-smoker (identity).
If the goal is to wake up earlier, the wish is to becomea morning person who rises early (identity).
Through the process of becoming, and feeling the new you in the new state, you’re building a new identity that you’re proud of. It’s an identity consciously chosen by you, for you. When you check this in your Tiwiw wish list daily, this will be a positive affirmation.
Daily affirmations are to the mind what exercise is to the body. Repeating affirmations helps to reprogram the unconscious mind for success. You’ll be truly committed to making them happen.
We can learn and change in a state of pain and suffering, or we can evolve in a state of joy and inspiration…
To go with the latter, we just have to make up our minds that change will probably involve a bit of discomfort, some inconvenience, a break from a predictable routine, a period of not knowing and trust in new transformation platform – TIWIW.
So when are you adding your new identity wish or your wish to become ‘Conscious Consumer’ on TIWIW?
